The Seeds of Diversity: Lessons from Tropical Trees

چکیده

The history of life is fi lled with examples of one species diverging into several, even thousands, each with unique traits geared to the demands of its ecological niche. In the textbook case of adaptive radiation, an ancestral fi nch species landed on the Galapagos Islands just a few million years ago, and evolved into 13 new species with specialized beaks adapted to exploiting the various seeds, nuts, insects, and other food sources on the island. Adaptive radiations suggest that species evolution follows the fi rst rule of business: fi nd a niche and fi ll it. But that's not what most models used to detect evolutionary patterns of trait evolution assume. And in a new study, Robert Freckleton and Paul Harvey demonstrate the limitations of that choice. They also introduce a method to minimize those limitations by using a diagnostic tool that can detect evolutionary patterns that deviate from the standard models. The complexity of evolutionary processes and spottiness of the fossil record calls for statistical models— whose accuracy depends on their assumptions—to infer historical patterns of evolution. Traditional approaches to studying the evolution of traits (such as beak shape) typically compare populations, species, or higher taxa to identify adaptations and the corresponding evolutionary processes. With advances in molecular genomic techniques, comparative methods increasingly incorporate phylogenetic analyses, which compare gene or protein sequences to infer evolutionary relationships between taxa or traits. These phylogenetic comparative methods often use a " Brownian motion " model of evolution, which assumes that more closely related species are more similar to each other and generate expected distributions of trait change among the species compared. Freckleton and Harvey suspected that the models could produce specious correlations, because they don't explicitly account for ecological processes. Such a model— which, the authors point out, has rarely been tested—assumes (among other things) that traits evolve at a constant rate over time. Freckleton and Harvey analyzed real and simulated data using a niche-fi lling model and a Brownian motion model and then applied two statistical tests as diagnostic tools to detect patterns of trait evolution that fall outside the assumptions of the Brownian motion. In the niche-fi lling model, niche space is initially empty (much like Darwin's fi nches may have encountered), and new niches arise at a given rate, in random positions, and are instantly invaded by species with traits suited to exploiting that niche. Evolution occurs only …

How mammalian predation contributes to tropical tree community structure.

The recruitment of seedlings from seeds is the key demographic transition for rain forest trees. Though tropical forest mammals are known to consume many seeds, their effects on tree community structure remain little known. To evaluate their effects, we monitored 8,000 seeds of 24 tree species using exclosure cages that were selectively permeable to three size classes of mammals for up to 4.4 y...

The contribution of seed dispersers to tree species diversity in tropical rainforests

Tropical rainforests are known for their extreme biodiversity, posing a challenging problem in tropical ecology. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the diversity of tree species, yet our understanding of this phenomenon remains incomplete. Here, we consider the contribution of animal seed dispersers to the species diversity of trees. We built a multi-layer lattice model of trees whos...

Directed seed dispersal by bellbirds in a tropical cloud forest.

A fundamental goal of plant population ecology is to understand the consequences for plant fitness of seed dispersal by animals. Theories of seed dispersal and tropical forest regeneration suggest that the advantages of seed dispersal for most plants are escape from seed predation near the parent tree and colonization of vacant sites, the locations of which are unpredictable in space and time. ...

Study of Genetic Diversity among Philodendron Varieties by Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA Markers

In the present study, Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to analyze the genetic diversity in 20 varieties of Philodendron. The polymerase chain reaction was performed with 60 RAPD primers, out of which 21 primers showed clear amplification as well as more polymorphism. In total, 354 scorable RAPD loci with 348 polymorphic bands (98%) were observed. Percentages of polymo...

Seed dispersal of woody plants in tropical forests: concepts, examples and future directions

Introduction Understanding seed dispersal is critical to understanding plant population and community dynamics (Nathan & Muller-Landau 2000), especially in tropical forests where seed rain of virtually all plant species is sparse and patchy (Hubbell et al. 1999; Muller-Landau et al. 2002). Seed rain determines potential population growth rates and spatial patterns, as well as the relative influ...

Effects of forest fragmentation on the effective and realized gene flow of Neotropical tree species: implications for genetic conservation

Tree species are key organisms of forest ecosystems, due their size and extended life, providing the environmental setting for many other living organisms. The levels of genetic diversity and the effective population sizes are essential issues for the maintenance and survival of tree species populations, because they direct adaptation to the current environment and future environmental changes....
